Birthday Girl; Trowa's Girl

Part IV

Her grey eyes shone with love. In the box lay the ring Trowa had 'put away'. Everything froze in her mind. Even as he knelt and took her hand. She couldn't hear him but he knew what he was saying. All she heard was his last sentence.

"Midii, Will you marry me?" She was speechless, smiling but speechless. Finally she could manage just four words.

"Yes. I love you," she said, melting into his arms. They backed into her bed, fighting for breath. They kissed into the endless night.

She awoke before him. Trying to adjust to the bright light, she blinked and sat up. The air was cold on her bare arms- and back. She looked down on Trowa- who was fast asleep. She laid back and rested her head on his chest. When he didn't wake up he grabbed the throw on the foot of the bed and wrapped herself in it.

She walked to her bathroom and brushed her teeth. Reaching for her make up, she thought better of it and walked back to the bed. She sat down on the edge of the bed and looked at the ring on her delicate finger. Trowa had definitely splurged on this one. The platinum band sported three tiny baguette diamonds. Excitement flooded her. She was going to be married- to the first one she had loved.

"Nanashi...no name," she whispered. She looked down on the soldier, aged beyond his twenty years. She was going to get married. It sounded wonderful.

Suddenly someone knocked on the door. It woke up Trowa. He looked at Misty.

"Good morning, love. My fiancé," she said quietly, walking to Trowa's room and then the door.

"Room Service!" they yelled from the other side of the door.

"Damn...Trowa, did you order..."

"No!" Trowa yelled, sitting up. Misty opened the door to see Duo with a camera. He snapped a photo.

"DUO MAXWELL!" she yelled surprisingly loudly, almost dropping the throw. Duo stuck his head inside and saw Trowa. He turned and started singing.

"Go Trowa..."

The night had proven hard for Heero. Now that Quatre knew his secret he was forced to deal with the Misty issue. He loved her. But one thought haunted him- she was Trowa's girl. And it was true; too- they were deeply in love. He wanted to kick himself every time he realized he could have gotten there first.

Quatre knew what Heero was going through. He had seen it in Trowa, too. He knew Misty's feelings for everyone- and was quick to point that out if there was any confusion. Quatre was satisfied that Misty considered him a brother. Not that he needed any more sisters- but it was nice having someone whom shared the same views as he did.

Heero struggled with his feelings. Even if Misty and Trowa weren't a couple, he would have to go through Zechs. He was the closest thing to family she had- besides Quatre. It would be even harder to give up Misty for Zechs- he wasn't about to lose another like Relena. He could only hope when he revealed his secret that he would have the upper hand.

Two hours later both Trowa and Misty sat downstairs in the hotel restaurant. The two of them had talked over breakfast for the past hour, and barely eaten. Now they were faced with the whole engagement announcement. Misty was entirely in la-la land, going on and on about her 'vision' for the wedding.

"Misty- what about the name?"

"Excuse me?" she asked, biting into her muffin.

"Your name- what will you use?"

"Umm...on the invitation- Midii Alenkla Weisz- Une? No...Midii Misty- no that won't work...Oh, okay- Midii Weisz-Une. I will take your name."

"Barton?"

"Yes, Trowa. Midii Barton sounds wonderful. Now how long do you want the engagement? And tell the truth- I really don't care."

"Neither do I. I'm not as worried about the engagement as telling EVERYBODY about it. Especially Zechs," he said. "Misty, are you catholic?" he asked with genuine solemnity. She laughed.

"No! But we're probably going to have to get married in a catholic church- just to hold all of Cat's family. I say as soon as possible- we all go to another club and announce it...tonight."

"Tonight."

The six of them left to go home three hours later. Trowa and Misty didn't leave until they had told everyone to go to the Scarlet Lounge at nine. Neither of them knew anything about it except it was highly recommended. Then, giggling, the two piled into the cab.

Heero still hadn't said a word- or acknowledged anyone except for Quatre's "Your secret's safe with me." Still, Misty's happy expression was etched into his mind. He watched her and Trowa's cab speed away. He had given up on love for now, yet again.

Everyone showed up for Misty's party the second time around. She came in wearing a slightly more low-key outfit- a halter top with 'rock star' airbrushed across it and glittery jeans. The makeup she wore was the same as before. Because the club was more crowded than before only about half of the guests returned. She carried with her a mysterious briefcase. She got a table with the Pilots and their girlfriends, who were trying to yell their orders over the outrageously loud music.

After finishing off their drinks Misty and Trowa prepared to make the announcement. They looked at each other and walked to the stage to tell everyone when...

"...And now your favorite part of the evening- Kareoke Hour!" the DJ yelled. Trowa and Misty froze.

"We got a Kareoke bar! Well, I think we win the idiot's award of the century..." he said. As they turned to deliver the news table to table, the DJ saw them and pulled them onstage.

"Yo two- from the awesome party last night! Want to sing?"

"NO!" they replied.

"Come on...show us what you got!" Misty shrugged and went backstage, hissing to Trowa,

"Listen...I'll hold him off. Go out the back door and come back. GO!" He ran ahead and she went for the book. Taking her time, she selected one and ran onstage. Waiting for a cue of some sort, she started to sing.

Looking back through the years down this highway
Memories they don't lead up to this one day
And many dreams lost along the way
Haunt me still, I guess they always will
When love was too much to bear I guess I just left it there

"She's really good," Duo remarked.

"Yeah...she's always had the voice of an angel," Quatre replied. The haunting notes filled the building as Trowa ran in and took his seat. He overheard the two talking and joined the conversation, rather hushed.

"Is that Misty? Is that her real voice?" he asked. Quatre nodded.

"Yeah. What's that thing that keeps glittering?" Trowa froze. He shrugged coolly as he caught her eye, which was raised. She grinned as she continued.

Here I stand, face to face with this heart of mine
Living with you I only fall behind
We had a love that not many people find
All this time I never realized
And the courage I've finally found
Has made me turn around
There is only one road I'm walking
Only one lifetime
One heart to guide me
There is only one road I'm walking
And I'm going to run back,
I'm gonna run back
Cause baby I need you here beside me
I can still hear the sound of your laughter
I can still taste the sunrow of your sweet tears
We said good-bye but our hearts did not hear
now, my love, there's nothing left to fear...

Zechs and Noin joined the small table that the pilots sat at. The two older soldiers watched Misty sing. She put two thumbs up and continued. The diamond engagement ring glittered as she put her hand on the mike.

...With all my heart's put me through
It leads me back to you
There is only one road I'm walking
Only one lifetime
One heart to guide me
There is only one road I'm walking
And I'm going to run back,
I'm gonna run back
Cause baby I need you here beside me...

As the last few notes faded away, Misty took the mike off the stand and motioned Trowa onstage. They whispered to each other for a second and then she turned to the audience.

"I would first like to apologize to everyone who came here for anything other than my party. But all those who did- Trowa and I have an announcement. As of last night, we are getting married!"

Everyone had different reactions- most of her friends were screaming. Zechs was as white as a sheet. Quatre simply beamed. Duo yelled.

But Heero simply left. The door slammed at his exit. Quatre shook his head. Misty looked at Trowa and walked off stage. Trowa put the mike back and followed her.

"What is his problem? Everybody else is happy- except maybe Zechs- Noin, see if he's breathing..." she said, reaching for the briefcase. She passed out calculators and started doing estimations.

"Let's see...if we have five attendants each...they pay for the clothes and chip in...Someone pays for the church, the reception...okay!"

"Honey, you're supposed to wait more than two minutes before you worry about the money..." Noin commented, fingering her own wedding and engagement rings.

"Oh- I won't be paying for all of it... I'll tap into Treize's account that he left me. And Quatre can help- I think my dad left me a trust or something...and it helps to have a multi-millionaire on my side. I'm really excited! Besides...Trowa and I want to get married right away," she replied.

"The war is over. The Gundams are useless now. It's time for me- for us- to start a normal life," Trowa said, taking Misty's hand.

"Oh...and I'm going to use my real name now. You're looking at Midii Weisz-Une!"

"Finally," several voices muttered barely audibly.

'You know, MIDII...you're giving Sarah Michelle Gellar-Prinze a run for her money...aren't you a little scared of having three last names?"

"I couldn't be happier," she said.
