Hey! This's Angel! I'd like to thank everyone who reviewed "Nothing In This World". You guys are great! For those of you who asked for a sequel, here it is! I hope it meets your standards. Please continue reviewing. BTW, I put a PG rating on this and most of my other stories because if you're not above about 11 years old, you won't be able to understand some stuff. I did NOT put the rating there because of inappropriate content. Just so ya know! Ja ne!

In The First Place

By Angel of Death

Hilde Schbeiker stood in the living room of her house dusting off the photos on her mantle. Her midnight hair wasn't in a special hair-do. Just combed to get out all the tangles. Her black eyes focused on the photo she had just picked up. It was the one of her and her ex-boyfriend, Duo Maxwell. He was giving her "bunny ears". A small tear welled up at the corner of her eye, but she wiped it away before it had a chance to come out. She had done enough crying in the last month, since Duo had left. Every night she cried herself to sleep, and every night she would wake up screaming his name. Hilde dismissed thought of Duo, quickly dusted the photo off, and put it back on the mantle. Her hand lingered on it for a moment as she tried to make herself lay it face-down. But she couldn't. She stayed there for another five minutes, trying to make herself do it, but she was unsuccessful. This time she couldn't stop the tear from sliding down her cheek. She let out a heart-broken sob and wrenched her hand away from the photograph . . . that was still standing. She quickly wiped away her tears and was about to dust another photo when the doorbell rang. Who could that be? she thought in mild curiosity. Hilde walked over and opened the door. Her eyes widened and a lump formed in her throat. Standing in front of her was none other than Duo Maxwell, braid and all.

"I don't know why

You came back in my life

Or why we said goodbye

In the first place

In your eyes

I see where we have been

And what could be again

If we can erase the lies

And the tears that we both cried . . ."

"Hey, Hilde. Howya doin'?" Duo asked, a fake smile on his face.

For a moment, Hilde didn't say anything. Then she dropped to her knees and cried, harder than she had since the day he'd left. Duo dropped down beside her and took her hand in concern.

"What's wrong, Hilde?" he asked, his forehead creased in an uncharacteristic frown of worry.

"What do you think's wrong, you baka!?" Hilde sobbed fiercely.

Surprisingly, Duo started crying, too. "Yeah, I guess I do." he whispered, thinking about the day he had made the worst mistake of his life . . .

*FLASHBACK*

"Make me

Feel alive again

Take me back where we began

In the first place

Maybe

Maybe it's all wrong

But you never should have gone

In the first place . . ."

Duo stood in the rain, his back facing Hilde. His face was stony, his eyes devoid of emotion.

"You-you're not-serious, are you?" came Hilde's trembling voice from behind him.

"I may joke about some things, but I'm not joking about this." he said, sounding a lot like his friend, Heero, who supposedly emotionless.

"But you can't leave, Duo!" Hilde cried desperately, grabbing Duo's shoulder.

Duo shrugged her off roughly, as if she had burned him.

"What did I do, Duo?" she whispered, rain mingling with the salty tears that were now streaming down her pale face. Silence met her plea. Duo took a deep breath.

"Goodbye . . . Hilde." he said and walked away from her house to his new apartment that was just down the road. Hilde watched him go her heart shattering with every step he took . . .

*END FLASHBACK*

"Without you here

I always wanted more

Like what we had before

In the first place

And now we know

It wasn't all a dream

You're still a part of me

When hello became goodbye

To a love that never died . . ."

Hilde rested her head in the crook of Duo's neck, but moved away from him a second later. She stood up and dusted herself off as Duo did the same. "Why are you here?" she asked, a slight coldness in her voice. Duo looked at the ground. "Because . . ."

*FLASHBACK*

Duo took a key out of his pocket and unlocked the door to his apartment. It had been one month since he'd broken up with Hilde, and he was miserable. He walked into his apartment and flopped down on his bed, staring at the ceiling. The decorators of this room had sprinkled glitter on the ceiling after they'd painted it, so it looked like there were stars above him. He could pick out "constellations", too. DeathscytheH, his Gundam, all the MS he'd ever seen, but the "constellation" he looked at the most was an image of Hilde smiling her pretty smile. Duo's thought about all the good times he and Hilde had together until he was interrupted by his best friend, Heero Yuy. Heero walked in without knocking and threw a floppy disk to Duo. "There's the info on the new mission." he said in his usual monotone. But Duo didn't even look up. "Thanks, buddy." he said, sounding very sad. Heero looked at him for a moment before crossing his arms. "Why did you break up with Hilde anyway, Duo?" he asked, leaning against the wall. "Because I was holding her back. She could and still can be so much more than my assistant at the Salvaging Yard, and I was only hampering her. And I guess I didn't realize how much I needed her." Duo said, sighing. "Did she want to be anything else?" Heero asked. Duo fixed him with a quizzical look. "Whaddaya mean?" "I mean, did she ever say that she was unhappy with her life? Hilde's a pretty forward person, isn't she? She'd tell you if she was unhappy?" Heero asked, surprising Duo with his gentleness. "Yeah, I suppose . . ." Duo replied reluctantly. "Then you shouldn't have left her." Heero said. "I've learned that it hurts the one who loves you more if you leave without asking how they feel first, whether they want you to or not." Heero said, referring to his own girlfriend, Relena Peacecraft. "I can tell that she still loves you, and you only hurt her by leaving." he concluded. He looked at Duo with sad eyes. "I made that mistake, Duo, but I was lucky. I got a second chance, but you may not." Duo got up, a tear trailing down his cheek. "You're right." he said and sprinted out the door. "I hope he's not to late, it'll kill him if he is . . ." Heero whispered, watching from Duo's window as Duo ran down the road to Hilde's house . . .

"Make me

Feel alive again

Take me back where we began

In the first place

Maybe

Maybe it's all wrong

But you never should have gone

In the first place . . ."

As he finished, Duo looked up into Hilde's eyes, which were filling up with fresh tears. Suddenly, she pulled him into an embrace that displayed all of her sadness and grief. She sobbed on his shoulder, her heart so confused. Duo returned her embrace, stroking her hair and trying to stop her tears . . .

"I don't know how we ever let it end

Or why you're here again

How did it feel being out on your own?

No one love you when nobody's home?

You don't know what you've got 'till you watch it go . . ."

Hilde looked up into Duo's eyes, still crying. "So, what are you saying?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Her heart was banging in her chest, full of a hope she didn't want. Duo looked back into her eyes, a small smile creeping onto his features. "I'm saying that I want to come back, if you'll let me." he said, the smile gone as he listened for her verdict. For a moment, Hilde didn't make a sound. Then, a grin came onto her features. "Oh, Duo . . ." she said. That was enough of an answer for Duo. He looked up just as Hilde threw her arms around his neck, sobbing joyfully. Duo relaxed for the first time in a month, silently thanking God that he got another chance to make things right . . .

"I don't know why

We ever said goodbye

In the first place . . ."

Duo lifted Hilde's head off of his shoulder and gazed into her midnight-black orbs. "I'm sorry for what I did. I shouldn't have left in the first place . . ." his voice trailed off. Hilde smiled and pulled him closer. "It's okay." she whispered and leant in for a heart-mending kiss . . .

"Make me

Feel alive again

Take me back where we began

In the first place

Maybe

Maybe it's all wrong

But you never should have gone

In the first place . . ."
