Hiya, minna-san! I got the idea for this story one night when I was listening to the radio and Reba McIntire's 'The Greatest Man INever Knew' came on. I hope I made it as touching as I tried to. I tried not to give any implications on whether Catherine and Trowaare bro and sis in this one 'cause it could go either way and I want everyone to enjoy it. I leave it up to the reader to decide whetherTrowa and Cathy are bro and sis or not. And thanx to everyone who's reviewed any of my stories, please keep doin' it!
Angel~
Disclaimer: I don't own Gundam Wing, nor do I own the song 'The Greatest Man I Never Knew'. The former belongs to Bandai, Sunrise, etc. and the latter belongs to the fabulous Reba McIntire. You all know that, right?
The Greatest Man I Never Knew
By Angel of Death
Catherine Bloom sighed softly, climbing slowly out of the car with her friend, Quatre Reberba Winner. She walked silently downthe rows of gravestones, paying no attention to the blonde-haired boy behind her. Finally, she stopped in front of a gravestone andstood in front of it for a few minutes before falling to her knees and crying. I promised myself I wouldn't cry this time and now look at me! she thought miserably, noticing vaguely that her companion had put a comforting arm around her shoulders and was talking to her.
"It's okay, Cathy. We all miss him." he said quietly, about to cry himself. He looked at the gravestone and spoke to it, as thoughtalking to a person.
"I'm trying my best to keep my promise, Trowa, but I don't know if I can much longer. She needs you, and no-one else will do." hewhispered. Catherine, however, had heard none of this. She was too busy trying to ward off the tears and memories that threatenedto engulf her . . .
"The greatest man I never knew
Lived just down the hall
And every day we said 'hello'
But never touched at all
He was in his papers, I was in my room
How was I to know he thought I hung the moon . . ."
*FLASHBACK*
Catherine sat in her room in the trailer that she and Trowa shared at the circus. She was mending the hole in her costume when shecried out.
"Ow!" She glared at the sewing needle in her hand then looked at her red finger.
"That's the fifth time today! At least it didn't bleed." she muttered sulkily, resuming her aforementioned task. When she pricked herself again an hour later, she threw both needle and costume down on her bed and stormed into the kitchen where Trowa was reading over papers with calculations and battle data on them. The fact that he didn't move to hide them showed that Catherine knew about his being a Gundam pilot.
"Are you still looking at those papers, Trowa?" she said, shaking her head and starting to make herself a ham and cheese sandwich. When she was finished, she sat down at the table across from Trowa and looked at some of his papers while she ate. When she sawone say something about a battle the next day, she stopped eating and looked up.
"You aren't going to fight tomorrow, are you, Trowa?" she asked. Trowa finally looked up from the papers and nodded.
"Yes, the others and I are going out to colony Z-107428 tomorrow to destroy what the Preventers think could be the start of anotherfire." he said, returning to the papers. Catherine looked at him for a moment before finishing her sandwich and getting up.
"Okay, just promise me that you'll be careful and won't self-detonate or somethin'." she said, awaiting a reply. Trowa nodded without looking up.
"And promise that you'll come back." she said quietly. This time, Trowa looked up and gave her a small but reassuring smile. Catherine smiled, too, slightly reassured, and went back to her room to resume the arduous task of mending her costume.
"The greatest man I never knew
Came home late every night
He never had too much to say
Too much was on his mind
I never really knew him, and now it seems so sad
Everything he gave to us took all he had . . ."
Catherine jolted up in her bed at midnight, the night after Trowa had left for battle. She could hear screaming outside and the unmistakable sounds of battling Mobile Suits. Wondering what was going on, she grabbed her thick, red bathrobe and walked out ofthe trailer into the frigid air outside. All the circus performers were dashing about, screaming their heads off, and gesturing wildlyto sky. Catherine looked up and saw Heavyarms, Trowa's Gundam, fighting off a moderate-sized cluster of enemy MS. Catherinewatched, horrified, as he took hit after hit and tried to fight back. A MS snuck up to him on the side where his machine gun was andchopped it off, taking away one of Trowa's best weapons. Trowa turned, startled, and the rest of the enemy MS took the chance andattacked him, weighing him down with their numbers. Catherine's eyes widened even further as she saw an explosion that couldonly have been Heavyarms self-detonating. She fell to her knees, covering her mouth with a trembling hand.
"No . . ." she whispered, shaking her head, her red hair brushing away the tear that had been sliding down her pale cheek.
"No, you promised you'd come back . . ."
"Then the days turned into years
And the memories to black and white
He grew cold like an old winter wind
Blowing across my life . . ."
*END FLASHBACK*
Catherine stood up and wiped away her tears, looking at the gravestone that bore Trowa's name.
"Let's go, Quatre." she said, walking back to the car. She got into the front passenger seat, indicating that Quatre should drive. As they drove away, Catherine turned and looked back at the cemetery from her window.
"The greatest words I never heard
I guess I'll never hear
The man I thought could never die
S'been dead almost four years
He was good at business, but there was business left to do . . ."
"Goodbye, Trowa . . ." she whispered as the cemetery slipped away from view.
"He never said he loved me, guess he thought I knew
. . ."
