Nothing In This World

By Angel of Death

Hilde Schbeiker stood in the pouring rain, letting the droplets slide slowly down her cheeks. Her midnight hair was plastered against her head, the meticulous hair-do she had worked on so carefully that morning forgotten. Her black eyes, normally dancing merrily, were blank and empty. They were fixed unblinkingly on a distant figure that was growing smaller and smaller. Why don't I feel anything? I thought about how I would feel if this ever happened, and I thought I would feel insane grief, not . . . nothing. A hard, mirthless chuckle escaped her lips. What am I thinking? Of course I can't feel anything. You can't feel emotions when you've lost your soul . . .

"Love ended here today

And the dreams we used to share

I watched you walk away

As you told me you still cared . . .

Now I can't believe you're gone

How could you say goodbye?

You told me you would never make me cry . . .

You said . . ."

Hilde turned around and walked into her warm apartment. She started toward the kitchen with the intent of making a sandwich, but before she got across the living room something caught her eye. She slowly started walking in another direction, towards the mantle that held all of her pictures. She reached up and brought down one of her and Duo Maxwell, the loud-mouthed pilot of Gundam DeathscytheH Custom. He was grinning as he gave her "bunny ears". The ones that mean "kiss me now, marry me later". As that thought hit her, a solitary tear fell down her damp cheek.

"Oh, Duo . . ." she whispered quietly.

*FLASHBACK*

"Nothing in this world would come between us

No way you'd ever let me go

Nothing in this world would come between us

What did you know?"

Hilde was sitting at a photo studio waiting to have her picture taken. She tapped her foot impatiently. 'Where's Duo? This is just like him! To be 'fashionably late'!' she thought irritably.

"'Scuse me, miss?" a voice interrupted her thoughts.

"Huh?" she looked up.

"Are you Miss Hilde Schbeiker?" a young man of about twenty asked.

Hilde nodded her head. "You and Mr. Duo Maxwell are next. Please come up in five minutes." the man said and retreated to a place that was hidden from view by a thick, velvet curtain.

'Oh no! If Duo doesn't show up soon . . .' She shook her head. He wouldn't miss this. He knew how important it was to her. She wanted to give a copy of this picture to her parents, who were still living in Germany. She was so wrapped up in her thoughts that she didn't notice her name being called until someone shook her on the shoulder.

"Miss Schbeiker!"

She looked up and recognized the face in front of her as the one she had seen in the magazine article that was advertising this portrait studio. It was the photographer.

"You and Mr. Maxwell are up." he said, leading Hilde behind the velvet curtain.

"Where is Mr. Maxwell?" the photographer asked as Hilde took a seat in front of the park setting that she had requested as the background for the photo. She took a deep breath.

"He won't be in the photo." she said, trying not to cry.

Suddenly, someone burst through the door to the studio and rushed into the curtained-off area.

"Hey, Hilde!" a boy with a three-foot long, chestnut brown braid said, grinning like he always did. Hilde frowned at him.

"You're late, Duo." she hissed as he took his place next to her.

"I know. But it took longer for me to pick out the flower arrangement for this." Duo said, bringing a bouquet of flowers out from behind his back.

Hilde's face broke into a grin to match Duo's.

"Oh, they're beautiful! Thank you!" she said, breathing in the flowers' sweet fragrance. Suddenly, Duo started tickling her.

"Wha-Duo! Duo, sto-sto-ha ha! Duo plea-" Hilde laughed, unable to stop.

"Take it now!" Duo cried to the photographer, putting his hand behind her Hilde's head and holding up two fingers. Hilde kept laughing. The photographer smiled and took a shot that perfectly captured that happy moment.

*END FLASHBACK*

"What difference does it make

If I understand

The promises we break

Are never what we planned?

'Cause we planned to stay together

'Till forever then

Now forever has come to an end . . .

You said . . ."

Hilde wiped the tear away and gazed at the photo for another moment before putting it back on the mantle, face down. She needed to forget him, and remembering the happy times wasn't going to help. She made herself a sandwich, as she had intended, but lost her appetite as yet another memory came back to haunt her . . .

"Nothing in this world would come between us

No way you'd ever let me go

Nothing in this world would come between us

What did you know?"

Duo stood in the kitchen making a ham and cheese sandwich when Hilde walked in.

"If you keep eating junkfood like that you'll give yourself heart problems." she warned.

Duo grinned. "Don't worry, Hilde, I promise I'll eat my veggies like a good boy." he said laughing.

Hilde's frown deepened. "I'm not kidding, Duo! People get serious problems from eating too much of that stuff." she said, pointing to the sandwich.

As her finger shot out, her elbow accidentally hit a glass of water that had been sitting on the table. The water hit Duo right in the face, soaking him in seconds. He looked at Hilde, bangs dripping. He stared at her for a moment before grabbing the jar of mayonnaise that he had used on his sandwich.

"THIS IS WAR!!!" he yelled, grabbing a handful and flinging it at Hilde.

It landed right on her nose. She sputtered and looked at Duo, who looked as if his face would split from grinning so widely.

"I'll get you!" she cried and started chasing him around the kitchen.

Pretty soon, they both in the middle of a full-fledged food fight. An hour later, they were both covered in various food items. They flopped down into the kitchen chairs, laughing their heads off. When their laughter died down, Hilde leaned forward.

"I love you, Duo." she said quietly.

Duo smiled. "I love you, too." he replied and gave her a gentle kiss.

*END FLASHBACK*

"You said goodbye, you said goodbye

I hear it echo through this empty place inside

Let it rain, just let it rain

'Cause there's nothin' left between us but the lonely days

You said . . ."

This time it was too much for Hilde. She ran out of the kitchen and out of the apartment into the pouring rain. She ran all the way to Duo's apartment, which was down the road from hers. When she got there, she stopped and looked up at his window. She saw a light on and a shadow moving around. Although no one would have been able to tell because of all the raindrops on her face, a tear slid down her pale cheek. She turned around and slowly walked back to her apartment, with no way to fix her broken heart.

"Nothing in this world would come between us

No way you'd ever let me go

Nothing in this world would come between us

What did you know?

What did you know?"

THE END

Author's Note:

Well, there you have it! This is my first really "depressing" fic. I normally don't let it end like that, but sometimes it happens. Did you like it? Hate it? I'm planning on doing a sequel, do you think I should? Oh, and I forgot to put the disclaimer at the top so I'll say it now. I DON'T, I repeat, DON'T own Gundam Wing. I wish I did, but I don't. Please review! Reviews are what keep me writing! Thanx!
